Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika in central Africa is the longest freshwater lake in the world, and the second deepest after Lake Baikal in Siberia. It is bordered by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia.

A Fossil Lake

Due to the geology of the rift valley that serves as the lake basin, the water below a depth of 600 feet has not recirculated in as long as 20 million years. Thus most of the water in Lake Tanganyika is de-oxygenated and incapable of supporting aerobic life.
