The fifth largest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Michigan is the only one of the five Great Lakes located entirely in the United States. Between Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois, Lake Michigan has spurred dozens of tourist areas along its sandy beaches. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are separated by the Mackinac Bridge, which connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.
What Its Used For
Most use Lake Michigan for recreation, with swimming, boating and fishing. There are several sand dunes along its banks that are used for dune buggy riding and racing. There are also ferries that can transport people and vehicles between neighboring states. It is home to numerous state parks and has 47 lighthouses.
