  • History

The airport was built in 1929 as 105-acre private flying field. Construction began on September 9, 1937 on the new airport meant to fly thousands cross country. LaGuardia was dedicated on October 15, 1939 and its first scheduled flight was December 2 of the same year. The original name was Glenn H. Curtiss Airport, then North Beach Airport and finally LaGuardia Airport. The final name change was to its current name, LaGuardia Airport, after the New York City major that demanded the need for the airport in the first place.
