The M. Night Shyamalan film Lady in the Water tells the story of Cleveland Heep, played by Paul Giamatti, a janitor at an apartment complex who discovers a nymph in the communal swimming pool. The film takes the form of a fairy tale, and is apparently based on a bedtime story Shyamalan made up for his own children.

The Man Who Heard Voices
Sports writer Michael Bamberger wrote the book The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale about the contentious making of the film Lady in the Water. Shyamalan had initially planned to make the film for Disney, which had produced his previous films The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village.
When some of the executives, including production president Nina Jacobson, balked at the idiosyncratic script for Lady in the Water, Shyamalan left the studio and went to Warner Bros. to make the film in the way that he wanted.
