La Perla was a clandestine prison used by the Argentine government during the "dirty war" against supposed dissidents and subversives between 1976-1983. The leaders of the country at that time were a military junta which snatched power from Isabel Peron in 1976. On July 24, 2008, an Argentine court sentenced eight men, including ex-general Luciano Menendez, to jail terms for the killing of four leftists during the "dirty war."
