company history and where they are going.
This company started in Los Angeles around 1984, they originally bought up single location health clubs that were failing and slowly grew the company and then around 1995 they started opening their first prototype sports clubs, the design has evolved over the years to where it is pretty much standardized in that there are usually 5 racquetball courts, 3 flat benches, 2 squat racks, 2 smith machines, most of the free weight equipment that you would expect to see in a gym, 20 or so treadmills, 4 step mills, and at least a dozen elliptical gliders, steppers, bikes and recumbent bikes. The Irvine club which is near their headquarters is the prototype for all the current freestanding clubs. This company has over 300 locations and is expanding across the country with the strongest expansion in the northeast, Illinois, Florida, Georgia and Texas in addition to the ongoing expansion elsewhere. What they offer is generally large sports clubs with a lot of equipment, and they are consistent about it. Recently they have been opening more of their signature clubs, which are clubs that offer more amenities such as towel service, individual television monitors on each piece of cardio equipment and more personalized training. This company should hit 400 clubs this year or next which is about the number that 24 Hour Fitness has (their main competitor) but they are in more states than 24 hour fitness.
