  • Background

Nirvana is widely credited for bringing grunge music to the mainstream and opening the doors for fellow Seattle bands such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains to achieve widespread success. Nirvana's breakthrough was their 1991 album Nevermind which, propelled by smash hit singles such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Lithium," sold over 10 million copies and turned the band into an overnight sensation. The extreme fame made Cobain uncomfortable, however, particularly the fact that he had unwillingly been christened the "spokesman of a generation" because his songs resonated so well with Generation X.

Nirvana would go on to release one more studio album (In Utero, their third) and a live acoustic album (Unplugged) before Cobain's struggles with fame and heroin addiction led him to commit suicide at age 27 in his Seattle home in April of 1994. Cobain was survived by his widow, Hole singer Courtney Love, and daughter Francis Bean.
