Krispy Kreme announced in October 2008 that they would offer free doughnuts to voters on Election Day, November 4, 2008. This caused a small controversy because it is illegal in most states to offer prizes for voting. Krispy Kreme did not require customers to prove they had voted, and gave the doughnuts away as a gesture of goodwill.

Krispy Kreme announced on January 14, 2009 that they would repeat their gesture of goodwill by giving away free doughnuts to customers on January 20, Inauguration Day. The popular doughnut chain issued a statement saying, "Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is honoring Americans' sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, January 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies; just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet 'free' can be."Perez Hilton: Free Is Good (January 14, 2009)
