Kosovo Independence Declaration

  • Kosovo's Ethnic Albanian leaders declared Independence on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Kosovo's parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi said: "Kosovo is a republic _ an independent, democratic and sovereign state". Serb Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica stated before the announcement that Serbia would "in advance cancel out the... creation of a fictitious state". The BBC reported that a "high-level Serbian security council has been meeting to discuss a secret "action plan" if [Kosovo declares independence]".
