Kool-Aid in Popular Culture
Kool-Aid is a beverage with many uses, and has been a part of American consciousness for almost 80 years. It has come to take on some unusual associations. The phrase "Drinking the Kool-Aid" means having completely bought into a particular group or philosophy. It derives from the Jonestown Massacre, in which hundreds of people committed suicide by drinking poisoned Flavor Aid, a similar drink to the better-known Kool-Aid. In the 1960s, putting LSD in Kool-Aid was a method of consumption and led to the name of Tom Wolfe's book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
