Knitting needles (called Pins in Europe) come in all shapes and sizes. Needles can be Single Pointed, Double Pointed, Circular, and Flex. Sizes range from 0.70 mm (designated size 0000000 in America) to 20 mm (size 36 in America). Knitting needles are also made from a variety of materials, from aluminum and nickel plated, to glass, to plastic, to various types of wood, including bamboo, birch, rosewood, and ebony.

Single pointed needles are straight and available in different lengths. They are most often used for knitting a flat piece. Flex needles are similar, but only the beginning of the needle is hard, with the remainder of the needle being made of nylon cord. Double pointed needles are short, straight needles, with points on both ends. These needles were originally created to "knit in the round" (knitting tubes). Now they are most used for knitting small sized tubes like socks and mittens, and for starting circular knitting. Circular needles are two short, single pointed needles attached by a nylon or metal cord. Originally intended for larger knitting in the round projects, they are the most versatile needles and can replace all the others.
