Kiyomizu Temple

  • The Kiyomizu Temple, also referred to as the Kiyomizudera, is a symbol of imperial Japan and Buddhist architecture. The temple is located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan, the city which it overlooks. Kiyomizu translated means pure or clear water and describes the main temples position over a waterfall.
  • The Structure

    A large veranda supported by pillars provides the view of the green landscape surrounding the structure. Under the main hall is the Otowa-no-taki waterfall which flows from three streams into a pond that is known to have healing properties. There are smaller shrines within the temple, most notably the Jishu-jinja which is dedicated to the god of love. Filled with paper lanterns and incense the temple is a popular visit among tourists.
  • How to Get There

    The temple can be reached from Kyoto Station in about 15 minutes by bus. Bus number 100 or 206 get off at Kiyomizu and once there it's an additional 15 minute walk to the temple. Along the way there are many shops and restaurants selling pottery, sweets, and souvenirs.
