Kiwi fruit is a round edible berry, also known as Chinese gooseberry, about the size of an egg. It has a fibrous, hairy, brownish-green skin and green or golden flesh with little, black, edible seeds. The flavor is mildly sweet to tart. It is native to China, but was renamed in the mid-20th century for marketing purposes and received its name from the Kiwi bird of New Zealand. Kiwifruit is commonly used in salsa, chutney, salads, smoothies and fresh fruit tarts.
Italy produces the most Kiwi fruit, followed by New Zealand and then Chile. The United States relies on imports to meet local demand. United States production is solely California. All but ten percent of California produced Kiwifruits are consumed fresh.
