Kiss Me Kate is a musical play-within-a-play based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. It was written in response to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and was the only one of his shows to run for more than a thousand performances on Broadway. The original 1948 cast at the New Century Theatre included Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang. Kiss Me, Kate was revived in 1999 at the Martin Beck Theater for 881 performances starring Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie.
