The Story So Far...
- The Killzone franchise concerns two planets hundreds of years in the future.
- The two Earth colonies, Vekta and Helghan, were colonized by a corporation when space exploration first ramped up in the 21st Century. Helghan is rich in natural resources and a key location to the survival of Earth and the rest of its colonies, but with a harsh climate and environment; Vekta is a paradise planet where life is easy.
- In the first Killzone, the people of Helghan, under a new leader named Scolar Visari and known as the Helghast, launched a surprise invasion against Vekta. This was the result of economic sanctions and the harsh life the Helghan people have had to endure.
- Under Visari, the Helghast began to work to take over Vekta and control this key star system. This would catapult Helghan into a position to control Earth and the rest of the colonies, gain its independence, and flex muscle over everyone else in the galaxy.
- The events of Killzone chronicle the exploits of Jan Templar, an ISA soldier on Vekta. The ISA is a colonial defense force sanctioned by Earth.
- Because of the heroic Templar, Vekta and the ISA repelled the invasion over the course of Killzone on the PS2 and Killzone: Liberation on the PSP.
- However, during the events of Killzone: Liberation, the retreating Helghast captured a Vektan nuclear warhead. They have the weapon, but not the launch codes to operate it.
- At the outset of Killzone 2, two years have passed since the Helghast retreated from Vektan. The ISA have launched an invasion of Helghan to capture its leader, Visari. Templar has been promoted to colonel and is commander of the ISA attack force.
- Despite the reports, the Helghast are dug in and are wreaking havoc on the ISA attacking troops.
- The player controls Sergeant Sevchenko, an old friend of Templar's and a member of the infantry troops being dropped onto Helghan.

Controls
- Movement in Killzone 2 is controlled by the Left Analog Stick, while looking and aiming is controlled with the Right Analog Stick
- Weapons are fired with R1. To throw a grenade, press R2. You can hold the grenade button down to pull the pin before throwing it. Release the button to throw the grenade before it explodes, so that enemies will have less time to react to the explosive when it lands.
- L1 allows you to execute a melee strike with the butt of your gun.
- You can crouch or take cover against flat surfaces by pressing and holding L2.
- When you move around, you move at a pretty slow speed. In order to sprint much more quickly, press and hold L3.
- Pressing R3 to pull a weapon up to your shoulder. This allows you to aim down the sight of a gun rather than shooting it from the hip, which allows you to get more accuracy. When you fire a gun from the hip, each round fired causes the gun to recoil and spread out subsequent shots. If you shoot from the shoulder, you'll absorb some of that recoil and all your shots will be more accurate.
- Reload the weapon you're using with Square. The gun will also reload automatically when you empty a clip.
- Press Triangle to switch to your secondary weapon, a pistol that you carry at all times. The pistol carries unlimited ammunition, but it slow-firing and weaker than other weapons.
- The X button allows you to jump or vault over low objects.
- At certain points, you can interact with the environment using the Circle button. This allows you to press buttons, turn valves, and so on. When you have to turn something, you'll need to tilt the SixAxis controller to manipulate the object.
- When you find alternative types of grenades, you can switch between them with Up and Down controls on the Directional Pad.
- Press Right on the D-Pad pulls the combat knife. This is a more powerful melee attack than the gun-butt melee move. When you've pulled the knife, slash at enemies with R1.

Weapons and Tactics
- You start almost every mission with an assault rifle, and this will be your workhorse weapon. It gets some additional range when you aim from the shoulder, but the assault rifles are pretty worthless from further out than about 10 or 15 yards.
- The rest of your weapons will be primarily Helghast requisitions that you'll find on the ground. These include the Helghast assault rifle; shotgun; single-action rifle; sniper rifle; pistol; rocket launcher; bolt gun; and electricity gun.
- The key to survival in Killzone 2 is taking cover. You can use L2 to press your back against almost any flat surface in the game, which allows you to avoid most gunfire. You can press R1 to lean out and open fire, or push the appropriate direction on the Right Analog Stick to lean out and take aim.
- Sprinting is also a key maneuver. You'll need to run from position to position while under fire at various times, and if you don't sprint, you'll take a lot of fire.
- Like many first-person shooters, Killzone 2 includes a recharging health system. If you're shot, you can get down and out of the line of fire for a few seconds. Your heads-up display will become more red and blood-splattered as you take damage; if you get out of danger, your HUD will slowly clear and you'll be ready to fight again.
- Listen to your teammates. They'll often give you tips and tactics for clearing certain areas, defeating certain enemies, or moving through certain locations.
- Your assault rifle is always reliable, but otherwise, try to choose the best available weapon for the task at hand. If you're in a close-quarters location, you might want to grab a shotgun. If you've got an elevated position against enemies, look for a sniper rifle.
- Make use of grenades. There are almost always extra grenades in every area, so feel free to toss them at entrenched Helghast. You can also "cook" grenades by holding them for a moment after pulling the pin, so that they'll explode sooner as they land on Helghast positions. These can flush enemies from cover to be shot or just blow them up outright.
- Look for red barrels and canisters wherever you go. These are explosive and great for clearing out Helghast positions. These are stationed all over Helghan.
