Mawae attended Leesville High School where he earned All-State and All-Academic honors.

He spent his collegiate years with the LSU Tigers where he was a starter for four years and was selected second-team All-SEC by Associated Press and SEC coaches as senior. Mawae was originally drafted by Seattle in the second round (36th overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft.
