    Kevin Johnson was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987 and sat on the bench as . Early in 1988, Johnson was traded to the Suns, where he got more playing time and was named NBA Rookie of the Month for April 1988. The following season, Johnson averaged 20.4 points and 12.2 assists per game. He was also named the NBA's Most Improved Player. Johnson would go on to become only the fourth player in NBA history to average 20 points and 10 assists over three seasons. Johnson helped the Suns pull off one of the biggest turnarounds in league history, taking the team from 28 wins in 1987-88 to 55 wins the following year. In Johnson's 10 full seasons, the Suns reached the playoffs in all 10. The addition of Charles Barkley to the team helped the Suns reach the NBA Finals in 1993.
