Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of Kenya's presidential election, held on December 30, 2007. Immediately after Kibaki was declared winner, mass riots erupted throughout the country to protest his suspected election fraud. Runner-up Raila Odinga called for an immediate ballot recount. The violence did not subside until late February, when Kibaki and Odinga both agreed to a power-sharing system.

International Resolution
International diplomats intervened to try to resolve the political unrest behind the bloody riots. Both UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Frazer, helped mediate the political conflict between Kibaki and Odinga. They reached a power-sharing solution on February 28, 2008, which quelled the rioting. -
