Negotiations between Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga after a contentious election in Kenya came to a conclusion on February 28, 2008 when the two parties announced a power-sharing agreement. The negotiations, mediated by Kofi Annan, had stalled on February 25, 2008 but were able to move forward to form a coalition government. However, the terms of this government were tenuous and, on April 8, 2008, the coalition fell apart over a disagreement on the make-up of the cabinet. Meanwhile, Kenya's economy entered a crisis and unrest over the deadlock in the government is growing. Even with a cabinet selected, the coalition has several difficult issues to face, namely the respective powers of the president and prime minister and the terms of the new constitution.
