Kentucky State University Heritage
The idea of Kentucky State University was officialized on October 15, 1885, when Kentucky leaders decided they would address the African American teacher shortage in African American elementary schools. A State Normal School for Colored Persons was officially dedicated on May 18, 1886. Shortly after its opening on October 11, 1887, the normal school added a high school to cater to students who could only study up to 8th grade in their hometowns. The academic institution had its first white student in 1960. It was renamed several times until 1972, when it officially became Kentucky State University.http://www.kysu.edu/about/heritage/
