May 2010 Election Results
The Kentucky election results from the May 18, 2010 primaries have been recorded.
One of the biggest surprises to the political machine was the easy victory of the Tea Party Senate candidate Rand Paul over Trey Grayson. Grayson was endorsed by former V.P. Dick Cheney and former N.Y. City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani.
Another blow to the GOP was the victory of Todd Lally who defeated Jeff Reetz for the candidacy for Kentucky's third congressional district. Reetz was supported by the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC). Lally had aired his thoughts that President Obama wouldn't be able to pass a security clearance.http://motorcityliberal.blogspot.com/2010/05/rand-paul-not-anomaly-more-fringe-tea.html
Kentucky History
Kentucky, was the 15th state admitted into the Union, gaining statehood on June 1, 1792. Kentucky was originally considered part of Virginia until people started to settle in the region arriving via the Cumberland Gap and the Ohio River.
The original settlers fought with the Native Americans in the region until General Mad Anthony Wayne was declared victorious in the Ohio Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. The Commonwealth of Kentucky had already been established, but Wayne's victory eliminated most of the Indian resistance.
The State Constitution was adopted in 1891 mandating that the Governor's term is 4 years, a state senate of 38 members, and state representatives number 100. Kentucky elects 6 members of the U.S. Congress, has 2 senators, and was awarded 8 electoral votes.http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/us/A0859111.html
During the Civil War, Kentucky's position was not very clear and, in fact, Kentucky tried to remain neutral. Although many Kentucky citizens were slave holders, there was a large number of abolitionists in the state. The state banned any invasions by either side, but that declaration was ignored by the Confederates. General Ulysses Grant and his forces came to the area and claimed the state for the Union.http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/us/A0859112.html
Kentucky has been reliably "red" since the 1950s, though the state broke its Republican trend to vote for southern governors Jimmy Carter in 1976 and Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996.
The name "Kentucky" was taken from an Iroquoian word “Ken-tah-ten” meaning “land of tomorrow.”http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/us/A0859112.html
