The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the thoroughbred horse racing Triple Crown. It is widely regarded as the most prominent horse race in the United States. The race is run on the first Saturday in May each year, and has been held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky since 1875.
Super Saver wins 136th Kentucky Derby
The 136th Kentucky Derby took place on May 1, 2010. It was a muddy day indeed as heavy rains poured throughout the day. Morning runs were canceled, but the race still carried on, in was known as a "wet and wild race". Jockey Calvin Borel does it again, for two Derby wins in a row. Last year with Mine That Bird and now with Super Saver. Super Saver entered the race Saturday with 7-1 odds. After running the race in 2:04:05, the pay was $18 to win. Super Saver was followed by Ice Box, then Paddy O' Prado, and fourth went to Make Music For Me. The Run for the Roses
The Kentucky Derby is held as the culmination of the two-week-long celebration of the Kentucky Derby Festival. Each race generally lasts around two minutes and attracts celebrities, prominent business people and politicians from around the world. The race is one and a quarter miles long and open to three-year-old thoroughbred horses. With a purse of $2 million dollars, it has attracted horse breeders worldwide. The winner receives a blanket of 554 red roses that the Governor of Kentucky presents along with the trophy. The mint julep, the traditional drink of the race, has over 80,000 served during the two-day event. The Derby is also consider somewhat of a fashion extravaganza. Women appear in formal attire. Sometimes carrying posh umbrellas and wearing large, elaborate hats that may be entered in the Parade of Hats.
Kentucky Derby 2010 Winner Super Saver
Super Saver takes home the roses at the 136th Kentucky Derby. This gives jockey Calvin Borel his second consecutive Derby win. It was a messy, soggy day for the Derby and was referred to as a "Woodstock" by The Weather Channel.
