The 2010 Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver was announced on May 1, 2010. The race took place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The horses raced one and a quarter miles and the event has been held annually since 1875. Jockey, Calvin Borel won the Run for the Roses in 2:04 2/5 on a sloppy track.
Super Saver, a Kentucky bred horse, is owned by WinStar Farm, LLC. Super Saver has been in 6 races, won 2, came in second twice, and third once. He won the Kentucky Jockey Club race at Churchill Downs in 2009. He obviously likes the track and could be returning in Nov. for the Breeders' Cup Races. The horse had previously showed that he is not bothered by a sloppy track. He was sired by Maria's Mon who had also sired the 2001 Kentucky Derby winner, Monarchos. On the female side, he is a descendant of the famous mare, La Troienne.
Super Saver started at the 4th pole position, and Borel took him immediately to the rail. In earlier races at Churchill Downs proved that many of the winners crossed the finish line by staying inside against the rail.
The race was vintage Borel, whose nickname is "Bo-Rail." The win made Borel the first jockey to win 3 Derby's in 4 years. Trainer, Todd Pletcher finally won the Derby after 24 attempts.http://www.drf.com/tc/kentuckyderby/2010/contenders/SuperSaver.html

The Winning Jockey
Calvin Borel, the Louisiana native who quit school to be able to spend as much time as possible with horses at Delta Downs, won the Kentucky Derby once before in 2007. He was on board Street Sense. Queen Elizabeth was among the Derby-goers, and after his win, he was invited to the White House to meet the Queen. He is known for being able to sneak his horses into contention by staying against the rail. On Feb. 20, 2010, Burel was awarded the 2010 Santa Anita George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, named after famed horse, Seabuscuit's jockey, George Woolf who was killed in a horse race at the Santa Anita Track.http://www.findingdulcinea.com/news/sports/2009/may/Calvin-Borel.html
The Track - Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs has been the home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875. The track was the brain child of Col. M. Lewis Clark, who wanted a Louisville Jockey Club for highlighting Kentucky bred horses. The track officially opened on May 17, 1875 with a 4 race card, with the Kentucky Derby being one of the races. Bonaventure won the first race ever run at Churchill Down. The winner of the first Kentucky Derby was Aristides, who was owned by H. P. McGrath. The first trainer to win the Derby was Ansel Williamson, and the jockey, was Oliver Lewis, both African-Americans. The Twin Spires were added in 1894-95 when a grandstand was being added. The first national telecast of the Kentucky Derby was in 1952.http://www.churchilldowns.com/about/history

Super Saver went off as the 2nd favorite with 8-1 odds.Borel's race was reminiscent of the 2009 race won by Mine That Bird. Borel does his best work along the rail, hence his nickname, "Bo-Rail," and proved it again!
