  • Brief Biography

A native of Japan, Nagai worked for the Japanese photoagency APF and accepted dangerous assignments around the world, including in Afghanistan and Iraq. On September 25, 2007, Nagai arrived in Burma to document the pro-democracy protests in the Southeast Asian nation. Two days later, during protests in the center of Yangon, soldiers opened fire into a crowd of demonstrators. Nagai, photographing the activity from within the crowd, was approached by a soldier who, from an examination of video footage aired on Japanese television and CNN, executed the photojournalist at point blank range in the chest. The apparent execution resulted in the condemnation of the Burmese crackdown by governments across the globe.
