The victory was Pavlik's first victory since his only professional loss, which took place against Bernard Hopkins in 2008. Pavlik was born in Youngstown, Ohio on April 4, 1982. He started boxing at 9 years old and at the age of 18 turned pro. Pavlik would quietly accumulate an unbeaten record, then in 2007 Pavlik earned national recognition by knocking out the heralded hard puncher Edison Miranda. The victory earned Pavlik a shot against undisputed champion Jermain Taylor. Pavlik went on to shock the boxing world with a vicious knockout of the champion. In the rematch, Pavlik won a 12 round decision.
