Kelli Pedroia, wife of Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, was diagnosed with stage two Melanoma at age 18. Stage two melanoma is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 25 to 30.
Kelli blames her frequent tanning sessions for the disease. She was 14 when she started tanning in tanning parlors and during sunny times she would holiday in the sun. She says "my mother and I would just fry ourselves with tanning oil and no sunscreen."
Diagnosis and Surgery
- Noticed a red mole on her right thigh - a doctor removed it
- Lab results showed stge two melanoma
- Egg-size chunk of lymph nodes removed - leaving a three-inch scar
- Two years later: another mole removed from clavicle
- Summer 2007: mole removed from breast
