    Kelis released her debut album, Kaleidoscope, in 1999. The album has sold 249,000 copies to date. It was produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes. Her next album, Wanderland, failed to make an impact on the U.S. market. It was not until the 2003s that Tasty and the number-one hit single Milkshake boosted Kelis to mainstream success in the U.S.

    Kelis met rapper Nas at an after-party for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards thrown by Sean 'Diddy' Combs. Nas later proposed to Kelis on Christmas Eve of the same year. The couple were married on January 8, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia.
