  In early-November 2008, Kay Hagan was in the thick of a hotly contested race to unseat incumbent U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole. Polls taken in the weeks leading up to the November 4, 2008, election showed Hagan with as much as a four point lead over Dole. In late-October 2008, Dole began running ads in North Carolina accusing Hagan of accepting funds from the "Godless Americans" political action committee.
