Early life
Otomo was born in Hasama, Miyagi, Japan. He grew up during the turbulence of 1960s Japan. The riots and demonstrations he saw during that period were part of the inspiration for his manga Akira. In his youth, Otomo loved movies and would even travel several hours to get to the closest theater.
In 1973, he started his career as a manga artist and wrote his first manga Jyu-sei, which means "A Gun Report".
