Katsuhiro Otomo

  • Katsuhiro Otomo is a Japanese manga artist and anime director. He is the writer of the manga Akira and the director of it's classic anime adaptation. His more recent works include Steamboy (2004) and Freedom Project (2006).
  • Early life

    Otomo was born in Hasama, Miyagi, Japan. He grew up during the turbulence of 1960s Japan. The riots and demonstrations he saw during that period were part of the inspiration for his manga Akira.

    In his youth, Otomo loved movies and would even travel several hours to get to the closest theater.

    In 1973, he started his career as a manga artist and wrote his first manga Jyu-sei, which means "A Gun Report".
