After attending Indian River Community College in Florida, the Boston Red Sox selected Gabbard in the 29th round of the 2000 amateur draft. After six years as a pitching prospect in the Red Sox farm system, Gabbard made his major league debut on July 22, 2006, starting in place of an injured Tim Wakefield. In his debut, Gabbard pitched 5 1/3 innings and surrendered just 2 earned runs in a loss. The next season, Gabbard won 6 games for the Red Sox, before being traded to the Rangers with Engel Beltre and David Murphy, for Eric Gagne and cash.
  • Strengths

Gabbard displays good control, and throws a lot of strikes. He has good composure on the mound, and is still an improving player [1].
  • Weaknesses

Gabbard does not possess a reliable "out" pitch, and as a result he does not strikeout many batters [1].
