The Original Karate Kid
- Columbia Pictures released the original Karate Kid in 1984. The film follows Daniel (Ralph Macchio) as he learns the art of karate from his neighbor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against the members of the Cobra Kai karate school. Although Mr. Miyagi's methods are eccentric, Daniel follows his mentor's teachings and wins the karate competition against the Cobra Kai. Although Ralph Macchio had appeared in several films with the "Brat Pack" (Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy), The Karate Kid was his breakthrough role. Pat Morita was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Why Is Hollywood, Like, So '80s Right Now? [Film Schooled]
[...] It would actually be a FIFTH Karate Kid. There was a marathon a few weeks ago, and it included Karate Kid 3, which I had [...] even heard of, AND The Next Karate Kid, with Pat Morita and [...] two held up remarkably well, really, but still....
