A karaoke machine is a system in which an amateur singer is able to sing along with recorded music by singing into a microphone. The music is most commonly popular music, and the pre-recorded discs include the background music and vocals at normal volume level, with the lead vocals provided as words on a monitor for the singer to sing along with the song.
Anyone can be the star
The concept of karaoke caught in quickly in Japan, and soon spread across the world. By the early 1990s, there were tens of thousands of restaurants, clubs, pubs, pool halls and bars hosting weekly, and even sometimes nightly, karaoke parties. The machine itself usually includes a mixing board, two or more disc players, speakers, and a monitor.
Karaoke in the home
With the rapid advancement in technology in the video game console and personal computer industry, it's now possible for anyone to turn their console or computer into a karaoke machine. In fact, several programs such as Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore and Guitar Hero 4 have popularized the concept of people having their own personalized karaoke machine without all the extra equipment.
Another possibility to karaoke at home is to join the newly appeared online karaoke communities such as the social network Red Karaoke were users record their renditions just by plugin a mike, and then share it online making their own versions or videoclips of their favorite tunes. Then they get votes and comments on their perfomances.
