History
In 1896, a gentleman by the name of Thomas Swope, donated 1,334 acres of land to the state of Missouri for parks and recreation. A portion of this donated land was used to form Swope Park, otherwise known today as Kansas City Zoo. When the zoo was first established, it consisted of only a handful of animals which included six red fox, four lions, two eagles, two monkeys, one parrot, one coyote, one wild cat and a few buffalo. Over the years, the zoo has expanded its repertoire to over one thousand animals, alongside family activities and new attractions for all to enjoy. With over one hundred years of history, Kansas City Zoo has become a well known attraction for local families and tourists alike!
