• Kagemusha is a 1980 Japanese action-drama film directed by Akira Kurosawa.
  • Background

Kagemusha tells the story of a thief (Tatsuya Nakadai) who bears a striking resemblance to daimyo (feudal ruler) Takeda Shingen. Upon Shingen's murder, his brother, Nobukado (Tsutomu Yamazaki), forces the thief to impersonate Shingen full-time, thereby becoming a kagemusha ("shadow warrior" or "impersonator" in Japanese).

At first, the thief fools the Shingen's family and even his enemies, but is eventually revealed as an impostor. Following a colorful battle, the Shingen's kingdom is lost.

Though not as warmly received by critics as Seven Samurai or Ikiru, Kagemusha was praised for its imagery and "powerful" storyline by some, but criticized as "impersonal" and "dull" by others.

Nonetheless, it co-won the Palme d'Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival with All That Jazz.
