An avalanche on K2, the world's second highest mountain, killed eleven climbers in what is being reported as the worst climbing accident on the mountain in history. Other climbers are believed to be stranded at 27,000 feet because the avalanche destroyed fixed ropes on a part of the mountain known as the "Bottleneck."The New York Times: At Least 9 Climbers Die on Pakistan’s K-2 Mountain (August 3, 2008)
