  • Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer and songwriter k.d. lang began her career as a difficult-to-peg country artist that eventually moved towards an adult contemporary pop sound.

    lang's introduction to the music industry came in 1983. As a member of the Reclines, a Patsy Cline tribute band, she released two albums, Friday Dance Promenade and A Truly Western Experience. Both received positive reviews and got the attention of American labels, including sire, which signed her in 1986. She released Angels with a Lariat as a solo artist that same year.

    In 1987, she recorded a duet with Roy Orbison ("Crying") for the film Hiding Out. The single was a hit and propelled lang to even greater fame. Since that time, she has recorded several albums, including 1992's Ingenue, the album which solidified her status as a adult contemporary rather than country artist.

    lang, who publicly came out as a lesbian in a 1992, is an advocate for gay rights and HIV care and research.
