    Henin, a winner of seven Grand Slam tennis tournament championships and 41 WTA Tour events, Henin announced her retirement as an active player on May 14, 2008. During her career, she earned over $19 million in prize money, which ranked her fifth best all-time at the time of her retirement. She was married for five years to Pierre-Yves Hardenne, from 2002 to 2007.

She used a devastating one-handed backhand and her superb athletic conditioning to wear down opponents. John McEnroe often commented that her backhand shot was the best in tennis, for both men or women players. Fans and fellow players knew her by the nickname "Juju", and she had four runners-up finishes in Grand Slam finals as well. Inspired by witnessing Steffi Graf's 1992 French Open final loss to Monica Seles, Henin's matches with Kim Clijsters were some of the best groundstroke tennis matches in women's history.
