NHL Career
Markkanen was drafted 133rd overall in the 2001 NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers. He made his NHL debut in 2002 and played one season with the Oilers before he was traded to the New York Rangers on June 30, 2003. Markkanen played just 26 games with the Rangers, then was traded back to the Oilers. During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, he played for the Lada Togliatti in Russia. After the lockout, Markkanen played two additional seasons with the Oilers, then was released in 2007.
