At Roosevelt High School in Fresno, California, police officer Junus Perry shot and killed 17-year-old student Jesse Carrizales after being attacked with a baseball bat. According to eyewitnesses at the school, at around noon on April 16, 2008, Perry, an officer employed by the school, was passing students on their way to class when he was struck on the side of the head with a bat. He fell, losing his handgun in the tumble, and then removed a secondary weapon from his ankle, which he then used to fire on his attacker.
Allegedly, the bat had been modified to serve as a weapon. The school was locked down and the other students sent home immediately following the incident. Much of the aftermath was captured on video and uploaded to the streaming video website QIK.
It has been reported that Carrizales may have actively sought out the confrontation that led to his death, in what is being referred to as a case of "suicide by cop." His family has denied the charge, and feel that Perry could have used non-lethal means to constrain Carrizales.
