Juneau is the capital of Alaska and has a population of almost 40,000 people. The area (that encompasses the proper City of Juneau and Douglas, respectively) was named after the prospector Joe Juneau who was famous for finding gold in the area.
The Juneau economy is no longer based on mining, instead most of the population works in the service industry or for the office for the city and state administration.
Art Scene
Juneau has a number of arts and music venues including Perserverance Theatre, Juneau Symphony, Juneau Lyric Opera and it holds the annual Alaska Folk Festival.
