History Shaped on July 18th
From the Edict of Expulsion to the American Civil War, July 16 has been the day of history in the making. In 1290, King Edward I of England issued the Edict of Expulsion, which became the document used to banish roughly 16,000 Jewish men and women from England. The motion lasted more than 350 years before it was formally overturned in 1656.http://www.heretical.com/British/jews1290.html
The Battle of Fort Wagner/Morris Island
During the American Civil War, the Battle of Fort Wagner/Morris Island set a precedent for African Americans in the military. In 1863, the first formal African American military unit, also known as the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry failed on their assault. The unit went up again the Confederate-held Battery Wagner but to no avail. The Voluntary Infantry unit was attacked at dusk by the opposing unit. After brutal hand-to-hand combat, the unit was driven out with heavy casualties. Although the outcome was tragic, it proved to the rest of the world that African Americans will stand just as bravely in the sight of danger as any white comrade of theirs.http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/abpp/battles/sc007.htm
