Career
As an artist, Julian Schnabel rose to prominence in the New York art scene of the 1980s. He directed his debut film, Basquiat, based on the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1996. His third film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly won the best director award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, the 2008 Golden Globe Awards and the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards. He was also nominated for Best Director at the 2008 Oscars, but lost to the Coen Brothers for their film No Country for Old Men.
