    Despite being a consistently busy director through the early 1940s, Jules Dassin was blacklisted by Hollywood after being identified as a Communist.Allmovie: Jules Dassin Overview

    In the 1950s, he moved to France, where he directed one of his most acclaimed films, Rififi (1955). The film has been credited by critic Roger Ebert as the first modern heist movie.RogerEbert.com: Rififi (September 1, 2002)

    Dassin won the "Best Director" award for the film at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, and picked up a "Critics Award" from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics the following year.

    In 1961, Dassin received "Best Director" and "Best Writing" Oscar nominations for his work on Never on Sunday (1960). He died in 2008 at the age of 96.
