  • Joseph Bruno is a former Majority Leader of the New York State State Senate. Following the resignation of Governor Eliot Spitzer, and the ascension of Lieutenant Governor David Paterson to his old position, Bruno was made acting Lieutenant Governor of New York State in addition to serving in his position in the State Senate. Bruno stepped down from both positions in June 2008 and resigned from the Senate on month later.

  • Spitzer's Resignation

    As the Senate majority leader, Bruno assumed the powers and duties of the governorship, following the resignation of Eliot Spitzer. When Lieutenant Governor David Paterson was sworn into office on March 17, 2007, Bruno assumed the powers and responsibilities of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Bruno was commissioned to serve as acting Lieutenant Governor until 2011, but stepped down in 2008.
  • Bruno's Resignation

    Bruno stepped down from the positions as acting Lieutenant Governor of New York State and State Senate Majority Leader in June 2008. He resigned from the Senate on month later.
  • Indictment

    Bruno was indicted on January 23, 2009 on federal corruption charges. He is accused of concealing, disguising, and failing to disclose the existence and nature" of his relationships with people that conducted business before the state Legislature.
