Portuguese Nobel Prize-winning novelist Jose Saramago worked as a journalist and translator for decades before becoming a world-renowned fiction writer in the 1980s. His novels explore the human condition through unlikely and often supernatural situations. His 1995 novel, Blindness, was adapted into a 2008 film by director Fernando Meirelles, starring Julianne Moore.
