Open source, content management system Joomla! is a publisher that features caching, RSS feeds, news flashes and many other features. It allows a person to easily upload content to a web server without knowing any languages such as HTML or PHP. It is licensed under the GPL free software license and is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database. The most current version is 1.5. Version 1.6 is in development. Version 1.0 is still used by many Joomla users but it is not recommended for new sites using a Joomla framework.
Current version is 1.5.11. When using Joomla as a website framework it is important to maintain the latest version of Joomla. Get email updates when a new version is released by visiting: http://www.joomla.org/download.html

History
Joomla! was founded by the Mambo Software Foundation Incorporated in 2005. It was originally titled OpenSourceMatters, which main goal was to distribute information to web developers and other users. On September 1, 2005, the project was renamed to Joomla, meaning "as a whole". The first public release of the software was later that month on September 16, 2005.Feature Set
There are many extensions that can be applied to Joomla, which can easily be installed and used. Joomla extensions are categorized as modules, plugins and components. There are also global configuration parameters that can be put into place. Other features that Joomla features is blogs, polls, website searching, printable versions of pages among other things. Each of these features makes it easier for web developers to publish content to the web. Joomla! is designed to provide a platform for a dynamic, feature rich website that provides a user friendly site management interface.-
