Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell is a well-respected musician, songwriter and painter who became synonymous with the 1960s folk scene along with such artists as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. After moving to New York City and playing up and down the East coast, Mitchell moved to Los Angeles to record her debut album, Song to a Seagull in the late '60s. She soon began to build a name for herself as a folk singer-singwriter, and her popularity and influence grew into the '70s (including the release of one of her best-known songs, "Big Yellow Taxi" in 1970).

Mitchell continued recording and experimenting with her music for decades. In the early 2000s, she took a break from music and focused on painting, citing her discontent with the music industry. She did, however, release a new album, Shine, in 2007.
