New DNA evidence announced July 9, 2008, cleared the parents of murdered 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey of involvement in her death—and also established a DNA profile of the killer. Using a new method of DNA analysis, samples found on Ramsey's leggings were matched to samples found in 1997 on her underwear. Background
According to testimony, on the day after Christmas, 1996, the parents of JonBenet Ramsey found a ransom note for their child, purported to be from a "small foreign faction" and demanding $118,000.Tru TV Crime Library: Murder of JonBenet Ramsey Later in the day, the girl was found dead in the family's Boulder, CO, home. Ramsey's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were subsequently investigated for the crime. Their behavior immediately after the death—flying to their former hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, and limiting police interviews—was viewed as suspect by critics in the press. The ensuing media frenzy also included criticism of the Ramsey's parenting: Patsy Ramsey had entered her daughter in numerous beauty contests, in which JonBenet was presented in full adult makeup and clothing.
