Richman started playing the guitar at the age of fifteen. He was born close to Boston, and moved to New York in 1969. Richman formed The Modern Lovers who recorded one album before splitting up in 1973. When they broke up, Richman went on to form another version of The Modern Lovers, with different musicians and a different style of of music.
