  • Republican Jon Kyl is the junior U.S. Senator from Arizona and is currently serving his third term in the office. His seat is up for election in 2012.
  • Early Life and Career

    Born in Nebraska, Kyl moved with his family to Iowa as a child, and in his teens, his father, John Henry Kyl, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1964, Kyl graduated from the University of Arizona and earned a law degree from the University in 1966.
  • Political Career

    Kyl began his life in politics in 1987 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona's 4th District. In 1994, he was elected Senator from Arizona and has served in that capacity alongside senior Senator John McCain ever since. His 2006 re-election campaign was dominated by debates over immigration, and Kyl was a co-sponsor of legislation requiring undocumented aliens to leave the country within five years. He is currently the Senate Minority Whip and serves on the Judiciary and Finance Committees.
